The University of Arizona broke ground Thursday on a new cancer center at Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Cancer is the second most common killer in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control -- so it’s no surprise that cancer treatment gets a lot of attention. Later today, an outpatient cancer facility in Gilbert will break ground on a 100,000 square-foot expansion.

The Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center is the latest oncology hospital in the Valley to announce it’s expanding.

The Mayo Clinic plans to integrate its cancer treatment programs in Phoenix. The project will add on to a facility already under construction. 

Arizona State University has received a $3 million grant to fund cancer research in underserved populations. 

The Food and Drug Administration has quickly approved a drug to combat basal cell carcinoma. That’s a type of skin cancer that - until now, patients had no other treatment options. From Phoenix, KJZZ's Terry Ward reports.

Last year, we told you the story of a woman who uses medical marijuana as she recovers from cancer. (She wishes to remain anonymous.) At the time she first spoke with us, Arizona’s voter-approved medical marijuana law was still very much up in the air. That was over eight months ago. Her life has changed a great deal since then.
