Tuesday 9 O'Clock Special

Tonight explore the different styles and influences of jazz guitarists Charlie Byrd and Earl Klugh. Byrd jammed with Django Reinhardt, recorded with Woody Herman, and with Stan Getz introduced the Brazilian bossa nova to international audiences. Klugh was inspired by Chet Atkins and his first recording, at age 15, was with Yusef Lateef. He played on George Benson's White Rabbit album and in his touring band. Two different eras. Two incomparable jazz guitarists! Jazz awakes at 8.

Monday 9 O'Clock Special

Today we celebrate the birthday of "Brother" Jack McDuff.  Besides being one of the funkiest, most soulful Hammond B-3 players of all time, he was a marvelous bandleader and a solid arranger. In the 60's his band took off when he hired a young George Benson. He also played with Gene Ammons, Red Holloway, Al Grey and Grant Green.  Jazz awakes at 8.

Memorial Day 9 O'Clock Special

Memorial Day originated after the Civil War, and commemorates soldiers fallen in battle. Monday night on the 9 O'Clock Special, an evening of boogie woogie and battle hymns featuring Gene Harris, Jimmy Smith, Dave Brubeck, Ray Charles and more. Jazz awakes at 8.
