On Wednesday, Arizona carried out the first of two executions scheduled for this month. Edward Schad, the oldest person on its death row was put to death this morning.The 71-year-old Schad was given a lethal dose of pentobarbital at the state prison in Florence, and was pronounced dead at 10:12 a.

A Phoenix man has been arrested for selling counterfeit high-end brand name items at swap meets and other places. Phoenix police Detective James Holmes says 40-year-old Rafael Castro and a woman identified as a person of interest were taken into custody after 921 knockoff items were seized following a five-month-long investigation.

It should be windy and much cooler over the next couple days as a Pacific storm system moves through Arizona. Darrel Onton of the National Weather Service in Flagstaff says winds will be increasing as the storm approaches.

Governor Jan Brewer says federal officials are continuing to refuse her request to re-open the Grand Canyon with state funds. She says she is continuing to speak with officials in Washington in an effort to re-open the park.

The cost of food is on the rise, and chicken is leading the way. The Arizona Farm Bureau Federation says the cost of a typical market-basket of items is up 6 percent from last quarter. Marketing manager Peggy Jo Goodfellow says their shoppers found the average price of a pound of boneless chicken breasts was up $4.

A new report shows most of the country’s death penalty sentences come from just 2-percent of the nation’s counties, including Maricopa County. The Death Penalty Information Center report says Maricopa County is the fourth highest in the country in death row inmates and 10th highest in executions over the last 45 years.

In-state undergrads at Arizona State University can breathe a sigh of relief. President Michael Crow said he will not ask them to pay more next year. The university president said he will not ask the Board of Regents to hike tuition for Arizona undergraduate students in the 2014-2015 school year.

A food bank in Phoenix has shipped 600 emergency food boxes to the Grand Canyon. The supplies are intended for furloughed employees at the national park. Unloading of supplies at a fire station in Tusayan.
