"First Friday" has become a major event in Phoenix, when thousands head to galleries mostly in and around downtown to discover new artists and works or just have a good time. For some, First Friday has modified the perception of the Valley as being less than welcoming to non-traditional perspectives on art, but a disagreement between the Herberger Theatre Center and guest curator Robrt Pela, a longtime contributor to KJZZ, occured.

Sunday’s Arizona Republic included in its collection of obituaries the name of William French. He had been a respected attorney and judge in Arizona for nearly 40 years and even played football at Notre Dame as a college kid, but in the annals of this state’s political history, French is known as the lead prosecutor in the impeachment trial of then-Gov.

The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture got its formal start in 1932 when Wright had 23 apprentices living at Taliesin in Wisconsin. The school now operates in Spring Green, Wis. and about 20 miles away from us in Scottsdale.

We wonder where the jobs are in Arizona. We are nowhere close to the deep hole of the Great Recession when the state’s unemployment rate was 10.8 percent. The latest figures from July put the rate at 8 percent, but that still seems pretty high.

Law enforcement agencies conducted a series of pre-dawn raids Wednesday morning at an apartment complex in northwest Phoenix. The raids capped a year-long undercover investigation.Police said they were looking into gang-related drug and weapons crimes at the apartments located just south of Glendale at 2500 West Ocotillo.

Arizona Representative Raul Grijalva is traveling today to Nevada to get a firsthand look at a government corral used to temporarily house 1,500 mustangs recently gathered from federal rangeland. Grijalva is the top Democrat on a congressional panel on public lands, and an outspoken critic of the Bureau of Land Management's wild horse policies.

The Arizona Court of Appeals has upheld the right of a homeowner to put up a for sale sign, despite a homeowner's association ban. The ruling comes in the case of Robert and Cecilia Hawk, who bought a lot in a planned community in Flagstaff in 2009.

A new report warns Arizona taxpayers could be on the hook for cleaning up leaking underground storage tanks because of shortcomings by a state agency. An Auditor General's report found the Department of Environmental Quality has no way to prove many people with the tanks have the required insurance to cover leaks.
