Two recent cases in the Valley brought the term “mercy killing” to the forefront. In one, 86-year-old George Sanders shot his wife, Virginia. He said she insisted that he kill her to alleviate her suffering, related to a number of health problems, including multiple sclerosis.

The Phoenix City Council plans to replace City Manager David Cavazos who surprised almost everybody a few weeks ago when he announced his resignation. Cavazos is moving on to take the same position in Santa Ana, Calif.

A group of lawmakers and business leaders is planning to meet Wednesday to examine whether Arizona should reform its income tax system. Over the last couple years the state legislature has cut business and capital gains taxes and reformed the sales tax collection system.

The French Gulch Fire, five miles from Yarnell, has grown to 850 acres, and containment has risen to 15 percent. Now, the area is experiencing light showers and the chance for thunderstorms is increasing.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is issuing an ozone high pollution advisory today for just the third time this year. National Weather Service Meteorologist Austin Jamison says the pollution can be a problem for people with repertory problems and even healthy people who exercise outside.

Firefighters in the Mogollon Rim continue to watch the lightning-started Egypt Fire. Coconino National Forest Spokesman Dean Jones says the target burn area for the fire is about 6,000 acres, and that people in the area have nothing to worry about.

A new report released Tuesday said a better plan is needed to deal with the U.S. Forest Service’s airtanker shortage. The Government Accountability Office said the Forest Service should work with the Department of the Interior to develop a more coordinated approach, but not everyone is sold on that strategy.
