The Phoenix City Council has voted to begin
a national search to find a City Manager. David
Cavazos has served as Phoenix City Manager since 2009. He announced early this
month that he’s stepping down to take the same position with Santa Ana, Calif.

The U.S. Forest Service is running out of money to fight wildfires at the peak of the season. The agency is diverting dollars from other departments to meet firefighting needs.The Forest Service has spent nearly a billion dollars fighting fires this year which left it with about $50 million available.

A man accused of killing nine people at a Phoenix-area Buddhist temple is back in court 22 years after the crime. Johnthan Doody was granted a new trial after an appeals court ruled investigators did not fully advise him of his rights during questioning.

Wells Fargo Bank announced it will lay off nearly 300 employees in Tempe as part of a nationwide cutback. Wells Fargo earned a net income of $5.5 billion in the second quarter this year. It was a record, but rising interest rates have made the company’s home refinancing business less profitable.

suit against the Elections Assistance Commission to allow the state to require
residents to prove they are United States citizens when they register to vote.

The housing crisis hammered the Valley, and thousands of people lost their homes. Foreclosures dominated some
neighborhoods, while short sales became a too common part of the vernacular. Now with the real estate market
bouncing back, most of us are focused again on how prices compare with a year
ago, or when they will return to pre-recession levels, but what about looking for ways to
avoid the next housing crisis or at least limiting the damage?

Surfing in the desert is not an easy thing to do. There is a lot of sand but not much water. That is what has made Big Surf in Tempe such a big deal since it opened in 1969, and now Big Surf’s Waikiki Beach Wave Pool has been designated a historic landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
