The Yarnell Hill Fire killed 19 firefighters and destroyed about a quarter of the homes in Yarnell at the end of June, and almost immediately the Yarnell Hill Recovery Group was formed by local residents.

Tempe police said they were even busier the second weekend of their campaign to crack down on underage drinking. Many of those detained were college students. Officers arrested 486 people last weekend.

Iraq war veteran Brian Oller has spent more than $22,000 to pay out-of-state tuition at the University of California, San Diego. The Lubbock, Texas, native said he hopes to get in-state tuition this fall after appealing to the college’s residence deputy.

Two medical marijuana patients are hoping a voter-approved attack on the Affordable Care Act gives them the right to grow their own drugs. An Arizona ballot measure put a provision in the state Constitution overriding any law, rule or regulation that requires individuals or employers to participate in any particular health-care system.

Most of the Valley’s schools are now in session, but the planned opening of a charter high school in Yuma is on hold. The Yuma Sun said the Arizona Foundation for Social Justice is trying to secure the level of backing it believes is necessary to commit itself to the $8 million loan the group would use to build the school.

This Labor Day weekend the Willcox Chamber of Commerce and a local cycling club have organized a 66 mile bike ride to benefit high school students in Willcox. The Willcox Flyer bike ride is just one of the approximately 250 cycling events held in Arizona each year.

Enrollment has doubled at Arizona State University’s new satellite campus in Lake Havasu City. The college opened a year ago, but ASU plans to add some majors in hopes of attracting more undergraduates.

Tuesday is election day in Phoenix, and voters will decide on four council seats. Voters do not have to wait until Tuesday. On Monday and Tuesday the city will have 18 voting centers open in Districts 2, 4, 6 and 8 where city council seats are up for election.
