Governor Jan Brewer is back from a week-long trade mission to India, with what she hopes will be future economic development opportunities for Arizona. Brewer says she was in contact with dozens of business and government officials with the financial capability to invest here.

Recent reports that hundreds of sick desert tortoises at a Nevada sanctuary might have to be put down have triggered a public outcry. The animals are found in Utah, California, Nevada and Arizona. Desert tortoises have trundled across the Southwest for 200 million years.

Holiday travelers may have to look beyond Canyon Lake for the Labor Day weekend. The lake and part of the surrounding Boulder Recreation area will be closed. The Salt River Project said Canyon Lake, about 45 minutes northeast of Mesa, will be lowered through the weekend, but it is not due to drought.

Legal same-sex marriages are now recognized under the federal tax code. The U.S. Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service announced Thursday that tax returns for same-sex marriages will be classified as married.

Gov. Jan Brewer has selected a new leader of the Arizona National Guard.  He will replace a general who ran the agency for five years. Brewer appointed Col. Michael McGuire as the next adjutant general of the Arizona National Guard.
