Flags around Arizona will go back up to full staff at sunset Friday evening. Governor Brewer had ordered them to be at half-staff for 19 days, in memory of the 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshot Crew who died fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire.

It’s July, and that means the summer monsoon season is upon us. Dust storms of Biblical proportions may assault Phoenix the same way they always have, but what’s new is the way we hear about them. For some of us, those automatic smartphone warnings are getting downright annoying.

A couple months ago, vandals sprayed nearly 50 tags at Saguaro National Park east of Tucson, including more than a dozen of the iconic cactuses that cover the landscape. An example of vandalism at the BLM site.

Battles were fought across the country during the U.S. Civil War more than 150 years ago. A few of those battles were fought right here in Arizona. Picacho Peak as it is today. (Photo courtesy of Arizona State Parks) As a matter of fact the farthest west civil war conflict was near Picacho Peak, the summit that sits 50 miles north of Tucson.

There is a piece of presidential history parked at an Arizona airport. It is one of the first airplanes to fly President Dwight D. Eisenhower around the world in the 1950s.  This is one of three Lockheed Constellation planes President Eisenhower used during the early years of his presidency in the 1950's.

Arizona's jobless rate was up two-tenths of a point last month, on some unexpected soft numbers in education. It's not unusual for education to drop off at this time of the year, as non-professional staffers are laid off over the summer.

A new report sketches out where the job openings will be in Arizona over the next two years. And, even though the state is turning out some 24,000 college graduates a year, the report says three-quarters of the available jobs will go to people with a high school diploma or less.

The opportunity to buy a home at a discount, fix it up and flip it for a profit is on the decline in Arizona. The latest RealtyTrac study of the market shows there were 33 percent fewer single family homes flipped in the state during the first six months of this year, and 35 percent fewer in metro Phoenix.
