There is a frenzy erupting in the birding world over a colorful, chicken-sized bird not usually seen in the Southwest. The Rufous-Necked Wood-Rail is typically found along the coasts and in the tropical forests of Central and South America, but for the first time, it has been spotted in the United States.

Border patrol agents have rescued eight illegal immigrants
who became distressed crossing the southern Arizona desert. Spokesman Brent Cagen says a
ninth member of the group died from heat-related issues after they were
abandoned by human smugglers.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is bringing those
large blue signs advertising services ahead for travelers on rural highways to
urban areas this fall. Spokeswoman Laura Douglas says there are 300 exits in
four metro areas where the signs will go up.

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a New York man for allegedly stalking and threatening two
national television commentators and an Arizona
woman. 48-year-old David Simpson was arrested in Bath, NY
after Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he became attached to convicted murderer Jodi
Arias during her trial, and sent tweets to the victims.

morning after a heavy thunderstorm dumped a lot of rain on the town in a short
period of time Monday afternoon. David Lader of the National Weather Service in
Tucson, says
the storm hit with very little warning.

Park rangers at the Grand Canyon
are warning visitors to be on the alert for thunderstorms after a river guide
was struck by lightning. Spokeswoman Kirby-Lynn Shedlowski, says the guide had
to be airlifted out of the canyon Sunday night.

Fire officials in the state say, despite the loss of lives
in the Yarnell Hill wildfire, the number of acres burned this fire season was
the smallest in years. Carrie Dennett of the state Forestry Division says about
91,000 acres of state and federal land were charred this year, but that
compares to over 200,000, a year ago.

People who live in Safford and Graham County could see their water rates increase this week. The area is dealing with a 10 year drought that forced the eastern Arizona community to start mandatory water rationing, but the demand still exceeds water supplies.
