Cucumbers distributed from southern Arizona have been linked to salmonella in 18 states. The Food and Drug Administration is detaining imports of cucumbers from the Mexican company Daniel Cardenas Izabal and Miracle Greenhouse.

The City of Phoenix has received a $100,000 grant to paint municipal rooftops white. The reflective paint helps reduce energy costs and might put a microscopic dent in the city’s urban heat island. The city will use grant money to paint 70,000 square feet of municipal rooftops white.

State lawmakers have approved sending more money to the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission and giving the panel more flexibility in how it spends the cash it already has. The House and Senate on Thursday each approved the bill with bipartisan support.

State officials have awarded a grant to build a restroom in a popular area north of Sedona that has been shut down in the past because of water quality problems.  The Oak Creek Watershed Council has been awarded $253,000 by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to build a restroom near Slide Rock.

The Arizona House has given its final OK to a bill creating tougher monitoring of scrap metal transactions. The measure, from Representative Tom Forese enhances anti-theft laws to require all scrap dealers to register with the Department of Public Safety.

The Arizona Department of Weights and Measures is pleased with a recent audit. It showed grocery stores are doing a good job of making sure consumers get accurate prices on sale items.  Spokesman Shawn Marquez says they checked 29 markets around the state and found a 99.
