Arizona's Child Protective Services agency will get emergency funding to hire more caseworkers and other employees, but Department of Economic Security Director Clarence Carter says additional money sought by Governor Jan Brewer will dramatically improve the situation.

Tempe-based US Airways and bankrupt American Airlines appear ready to merge. Bloomberg News reports the companies’ boards are expected approve the merger Wednesday, after lengthy negotiations. “I think a lot of employees and a lot of people who are suffering from merger battle fatigue think, ‘Oh my God, it’s done!’" said Holly Hegeman, founder of the airline industry magazine PlaneBusiness.

The Appalachian Trail --  2,184 miles of public pathway through the wilds of one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, the Appalachians. The trail, envisioned by forester and conservationist Benton MacKaye as a refuge from life in the industrialized metropolis, was completed in 1937.
