AZ: In the Money?

Arizona is bringing in more money than expected.  August revenues were around eight and a half percent higher than the same month last year.  And, so far this fiscal year, the state has collected one and a half billion dollars more than it did last year.  So…the obvious question is…what should the state do with that cash? 

Want secure borders? Try something other than a danged fence.

“Secure our border” is a common refrain from some elected officials discussing immigration reform.   But KJZZ Commentator Julie Erfle says it’s time for them to start discussing real solutions.

When it comes to bass, Ray Brown says it all, and with soul.  He started with Dizzy Gillespie's band where he worked with the Milt Jackson and where he met his wife, Ella Fitzgerald.  Ray Brown became a huge part of the LA music scene and wrote for tv and film, and he recorded with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Oscar Peterson. Two legendary jazz drummers share a birthday today, Billy Higgins, from LA and Art Blakey, from Pittsburgh.  Blakey started the Jazz Messengers with Horace Silver, and his band continued to be a school for modern jazz  players, including Wynton Marsalis and Terence Blanchard.  Billy Higgins who started in LA playing rock n roll with Bo Diddley also played free jazz with Ornette Coleman and became the hard bop house drummer for Blue Note records.  Enjoy the different styles of two jazz Icons, Art Blakey and Billy Higgins, tonight on the 9 O'clock Special.  Jazz awakes tonight at 8.
